A string trimmer, also known by the portmanteau strimmer and the trademarks Weedwacker, Weed Eater, and Whipper Snipper, is a garden tool for cutting grass, small weeds, and groundcover. The thinnest trimmer line (1.2 to 2mm) is designed for short grass and low-growing plants such as ray grass and clovers. This type of nylon line can only be fitted to less powerful trimmers. Thicker trimmer line (up to 3mm) is designed for longer grass and can be used for medium-powered trimmers or brushcutters.
Light: 0.065- to 0.080-inch line is best for trimming grass around the house and whacking down common lawn weeds from around driveways, walkways, and fences.
Medium: 0.080 to 0.110-inch line is best for homes with larger lawns, or gardens overgrown with weeds that have tough, heavy stems.
Heavy: 0.110-inch and above.
Shape
The round trimmer line is ideal for home use and is more durable when used near trees, fences, and concrete. It has a basic shape that doesn't wear or break easily, and it is also easy to replace. However, it lacks a cutting edge and rips grass instead of cutting it.
The twisted trimmer line is stronger than the round line and has a better cutting edge. It is suitable for cutting thick, heavy weeds and delivers clean cuts while reducing vibrations and noise levels. The added strength also helps decrease line wear and breakage when hitting hard surfaces.
The squared trimmer line has four sharp edges that cut through the grass instead of ripping it. This feature makes it more powerful and cuts through thicker weeds more easily. It works well on modest-to-heavy, thick, overgrown vegetation and undergrowth.
Multi-sided (AKA star-shaped) trimmer line has multiple edges that quickly and efficiently cut through heavier grass and thicker weeds. However, it breaks more easily when striking rocks, stones, concrete, and fences.
A serrated trimmer line works like a serrated knife. It easily saws through heavy weeds and grass, leaving a clean cut and reducing your work time.
