The diameter size of string trimmer lines varies, and the diameter ideal for you depends on the task. For example, a 0.065″-0.085″ diameter string trimmer line is ideal for light jobs such as trimming grass, and a 0.085″-0.110″ diameter line works best for thicker grass, heavier grass, and weeds. Any diameter size that's thicker than 0.110″ is great for thicker underbrush.

Trimmer line also come in different shapes, but the shapes aren't just for looks. Trimmer line shapes change how efficiently a trimmer cuts and how it cuts. Generally, the most common trimmer line shapes are round, twist, square, star, six-sided lines and so on. Trimmer line with edges tends to cut more strongly than round lines, but it also breaks more frequently against harder surface.
1. Round trimmer line is the most standard type and the most commonly used, which is less resistant to breakage, but it tends to tear grass more than other types because it lacks cutting edges.
2. Twist trimmer line is an improvement upon standard round line, the twisted shape gives twisted trimmer line a bit of an edge in comparison to round. Trimmer line shapes that have edges are sharper, the edges that square and 5-point trimmerline have allow the lines to actually slice through grass and weeds.
3. Multi-sided trimmer line always leads with a cutting edges to easily cut dense grass and weeds, more edges create more cutting power. It's best for users to try a few and use what works for them.
It's important to mote that using line that has more cutting power can sometimes take a trimmer user off guard. The cutting edges can make the line "grab" vegetation a little more than round and twisted line. That grabbing action can acctually pull the trimmer down toward the ground.
